How to Download a Twitter (X) Video

You find a clip you want to keep. Maybe a goal, a recipe, a two-minute explainer you'll want again next week. You look for the save button, and there isn't one. Right-clicking the video just brings up a menu that loops or mutes it, never a "save as" option. So you try screen recording, and now you have a file that's soft and pixelated, framed by your status bar, with a notification banner sliding across the middle. Searching "download twitter video" sends you to a page that's three fake download buttons for every real one, and the clip you finally get has someone else's logo stamped in the corner.

There's a cleaner way, and it takes about ten seconds.

Why Twitter hides the download

X streams video the way most large platforms do, in small chunks over a protocol built for playback rather than saving. The player you see in your feed is stitching those chunks together on the fly, so there's no single file sitting behind a link for your browser to grab. That's the reason long-press and right-click come up empty. A downloader works by reading the tweet's public media data, finding the direct address of each video file, and handing you the one you pick.

Step 1 — Copy the tweet link

Open the post that contains the video and find the share icon. On the web, click the share icon under the tweet and choose Copy link. In the iPhone or Android app, tap the same icon and choose Copy link to post.

The link looks like https://x.com/username/status/1234567890. Both x.com and twitter.com addresses work, and any extra tracking text on the end (the ?s=20 and similar) is fine to leave in place. You don't need to trim it.

Step 2 — Paste the link

Drop the link into the input box at the top of the downloader. On a phone you can tap Paste to pull it straight from your clipboard, which saves a bit of fumbling with the on-screen keyboard. The tool reads the tweet and lists what it finds within a second or two.

The tweet is private or protected. If the account is locked, its media only exists behind a login, and no public downloader can reach it. You'd need to be approved as a follower and save it through a method that's signed in to your own account.

The tweet was deleted. Once a post is removed, its video files usually go with it within minutes. A link that worked yesterday can return nothing today. If you only have the URL and the post is gone, there's rarely anything left to recover.

Age-restricted or sensitive content. X gates some clips behind an "are you sure" or an age check that requires being logged in. Those often won't extract from a link alone.

Region blocks. A handful of videos are limited to certain countries, usually sports or music with licensing deals. If a clip is blocked where the server sits, extraction can fail even though the tweet loads fine for you.

If a link genuinely refuses to work, open the tweet in a normal browser tab first and confirm the video plays for you while logged out. If it doesn't play there, a downloader can't reach it either.
